Yuming Griffin Liu is a visual artist, sculptor, and art educator. He was born into religious turmoil in Communist China due to his family’s involvement with Falun Gong, a religion deemed a cult by the Chinese government. His nomadic upbringing across China and eventually across borders, seeking political asylum in the U.S., grants him a unique perspective. Along with this nomadic life experience, the constant contradicting voices from family, governments, and institutions—each claiming its own justification—made solitude and sorrow the undertone of all his creative works. From two-dimensional photography to three-dimensional sculptures, large installations to small miniatures, Liu’s journey as a visual artist relentlessly dives into bureaucracy, religion, and human connection through the lens of poetic surrealism.
Liu earned his BA from Kenyon College as a Studio Art major and is currently pursuing his MFA while teaching at the University of Notre Dame.
